This Mercedes-Benz 560 SL came into the workshop with a list of work identified by the owner.

After inspecting the vehicle ourselves, we identified a few additional areas that required attention. One of the main concerns was the engine running excessively rich once fully warmed up.

Issues like this often point towards faults within the fuel injection system, so our approach is to carefully test sensors and supporting components to pinpoint the exact cause rather than replacing parts unnecessarily.

Alongside this diagnostic work, we’ve also been carrying out front suspension repairs, including ball joints and bushes, as well as tidying sections of the interior trim. The owner is also considering fitting a period-correct classic radio to suit the character of the car.

Once everything has been completed, the car will undergo thorough road testing to ensure it’s running exactly as it should before being returned to its owner.

The 560 SL is part of the iconic R107 generation; a model that remained in production for nearly two decades and became one of the most recognisable SLs Mercedes ever produced.

The 560 was the largest engine fitted to the R107 range, powered by a 5.6-litre V8 and primarily produced for the American market. Classic Mercedes like the R107 reward careful attention to detail, and it’s always a pleasure to see them brought back to proper driving condition.

A couple of months ago, this Mercedes-Benz SL 350 arrived at our workshop with a moisture issue affecting the boot and interior; a common challenge for convertible models when water finds its way past seals and into hidden areas.

On these models, moisture can travel beneath the folding roof seals, collecting in the boot and potentially affecting sensitive components like the SAM units and wiring. Over time, this can lead to electrical faults that are often tricky to trace.

We thoroughly dried the interior, repaired the seals, and inspected all wiring and connections to ensure everything was functioning as it should. With the issue fully resolved, this SL 350 is now back with its owner, ready to deliver the grand touring experience it was designed for.

The SL 350 embodies Mercedes’ philosophy of refined performance: a smooth V6 engine, a comfortable yet purposeful interior, and the engineering that makes the R230 generation such a capable long-distance convertible.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Mercedes SL 380 we recently introduced, which arrived at the workshop with a badly running engine, several faulty systems, and extensive trim work still to be completed.

Our initial checks revealed low compression in one of the cylinders. Once those faults were addressed, we turned our attention to the air conditioning system, which was in a particularly poor condition.

To access the necessary components, we’ve had to remove the interior panels, dashboard and trim, stripping the car back to work through the various issues methodically and correctly.

There are still several areas that need to be addressed before this SL 380 can be returned to its owner. This rather distinctive car is a Triumph Marlin, a classic example of what’s known as a kit car.

Kit cars are built using a combination of donor vehicle components and bespoke bodywork, often resulting in something truly unique. No two are ever quite the same, and that individuality is very much part of their appeal.

Here’s the Mercedes 280 SE (W108) we introduced recently, now progressing steadily through the final stages of its time with us.

When this car first arrived at Phoenix Car Works, it was a non-runner due to a fault within the fuel injection system. That issue has since been resolved, allowing the straight-six engine to run as it should.

In addition to the engine work, the entire front suspension has been rebuilt. On a car of this era, the suspension is a fully mechanical system that demands careful attention to detail and precise engineering to ensure everything operates correctly.

The final stage of this project is the replacement of the brake servo. We’re currently awaiting the required parts from Germany, after which the braking system will be completed and thoroughly tested before the car is returned to its owner.

This Mercedes 280 TE has recently come into the workshop requiring attention to a number of age-related mechanical issues.

As with many of these classic estates, the underlying engineering is strong, but over time, components begin to wear, seals deteriorate, and systems require careful inspection to ensure everything continues to operate as it should.

Following our initial assessment, we’ve identified the areas that need addressing and have begun working through them. There are still a few stages to complete on this 280 TE before it’s ready to return to its owner, and we’ll continue to monitor and test the car as the work progresses.

We’re now taking a closer look at the Mercedes SE 350 we introduced a couple of weeks ago, the South African project car that arrived as a non-runner.

Since its arrival, we’ve been able to assess the mechanical condition in more detail and begin working through the faults that were preventing the car from running. As with many long-term projects, there’s a mixture of previous work, ageing components and areas that now require careful attention to move things forward properly.

Alongside the mechanical investigation, the condition of the bodywork and surrounding structure has also been reviewed, allowing us to build a clearer picture of what will be required in the next phase of the project.

This SE 350 is very much a long-term project, and we’ll continue to document each stage as progress is made. There’s still plenty to cover on this one, and we look forward to sharing the next steps as the work develops.

This rare BMW 2002 Tii has recently arrived at Phoenix Car Works from a long-standing BMW enthusiast.

The car has been brought to us with ongoing engine running issues that other garages have failed to solve. As with any vehicle that comes to the workshop, our first step is to carry out a thorough diagnostic process to understand exactly what is happening.

Once we’ve completed our assessments, we’ll put together a clear plan of action and begin the necessary work to return this 2002 Tii to the way it should perform.
