Day 9 • 4,330 km

Our first day at the hotel, so nice to have some space and a hot shower! It is low season so the hotel is practically empty, and very dog friendly!

Easy living - we hit up the beach, hung out on the balcony, went into town for some more fish tacos for lunch, back to the beach, the back to the outskirts of town for a fancier seafood meal.

Day 8 • 3,440km

We woke up on the east coast of Baja, greeted by a fiery pink sunrise, and cut our way straight across the peninsula to a tiny surf/fishing town on the western coast called Santa Rosaliíta. Not much there other than a really good fish taco stand and a bunch of American surfers camped out on the beach.

This was as far south as we’d go this trip, as we headed back northward bound along Mexico Highway 1 after lunch. We stopped at a roadside cafe for some wifi since there’s no phone reception and found a super nice dog friendly hotel on the beach up the coast a ways for a few days of R&R. A stunning sunset lasted seemingly for hours as we drove into the night, successfully checking in and grabbing dinner at the hotel restaurant just before they closed for the night.

Ellie hit a most satisfying number on her odometer this trip: 222,222 miles (357,631 km for our non American friends).

She was originally a California truck imported to BC then relocated to Ontario, hence the speed/odometer in miles.

1/4 of the way to 1,000,000 miles! 🥳

Day 7 • 2,985 km

We enjoyed a quiet morning on the desolate beach, the dogs went for a dip, made some Mexican breakfast and eventually packed up the truck and kept driving south to Bahía de Los Angeles.

Lots of construction and detours on the road to Bahia and Landon had a blowout into his car seat along the way but eventually made it to the mostly deserted town as it is the off season right now in most of the tourist areas in Baja. We found a little seafood restaurant and had some of the best fish and shrimp tacos ever.

We had to explore a little bit and found a novel spot just south of town to camp out by the sea at the entrance of an ecological preserve.

Day 6 • 2,800 km

We relocated an hour or so down the coast to a more sheltered cove in search of calmer weather to another beautiful secluded beach. Baja is chock-full of such spots.

As we unpacked we were greeted by a small pack of dolphins swimming by, maybe 10 meters from the shore. Such a magical sight.

So far we’ve been going to bed super early right after sunset but this evening we scrounged up some driftwood and had a proper bonfire on the beach, Landon was happy to help gather sticks and assist with adding them to the fire. His first campfire and needless to say he loved it! Nearby coyotes howled into the night but Hali kept them at bay.

Day 5 • 2,670 km

We upgraded our setup for this trip to include an EcoFlow power station with a solar panel and a proper fridge. No more having to stop for ice every few days. It was a game changer to have cold cervezas ready to go at all times and to be able to store meats and things without worry. The solar panel has been great in the baja sun giving us unlimited energy to power everything - coffee grinder, blender, our electronics. Will have to consider an electric kettle or stove next.

It was a beautiful warmer day with plenty of sun, we had a great beach day. Didn’t see a single other human. Landon and the dogs got plenty of exercise running around and exploring the beach and dunes, eating sand, and swimming in the surprisingly cool Sea of Cortez. We treated ourselves to a nice home made steak dinner with rice, beans and grilled caribe chiles.

The wind picked up in the evening so we tucked in behind a bigger sand dune for some shelter and a good nights rest, packed like sardines in the tin can that is Ellie.

Day 4 • 2,670 km

This is our life now. We returned to a beach we first visited 4 years ago, a huge stretch of empty sand just south of San Felipe. As much space as we could ask for, the dogs were in heaven. A bit of a gloomy day but still so nice to be here and settle down for a few days.

Day 3 • 2,500 km

We crossed the border into Mexico, super easy crossing as we avoided Tijuana and went through Tecate instead, a bit further inland. Ellie’s Air Conditioning has not been working for a couple of years now so we instantly found an AC mechanic and got that sorted, they capped off the refrigerant lines to the rear AC where the leak was and refilled her with the cold stuff.

We took the route east towards the Sea of Cortez and found a spot to pull over on some sand dunes for the night. A quiet but cramped sleep with the 5 of us snuggled in Ellie.

Day 2 • 1,670 km

Early rise at a Loves rest stop after a not so great sleep, onwards we go into the Sunday afternoon traffic of the highways of LA. Gen and Landon flew in on time and the 5 of us are reunited at last and ready for Baja.

After a stop for a much needed açai bowl of health we continued towards the border and stopped for the night at an old friend’s place near San Diego, so nice to catch up - last time we saw them was 4 years ago when we were heading to Mexico as well. The real adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 1 • 535km

Woke up at this massive rest area off of I5, it had room for several hundred cars, vans, and trucks and was mostly all full - some full timers and some travellers passing through. The longest day of driving ahead from Portland to south of Sacramento through lots of winding hills and rain, though pretty easy cruising.

We stopped by a sweet dog park in Eugene that is right in front of the Oregon Ducks stadium, where a college football bowl game was taking place later in the day so the area was already buzzing with early tailgaters.

Overall was about 16 hours on the road with a few stops to stretch our legs and eat some good ol’ American food.
