Generally, any car equipped with an engine management system can be tuned, which includes both petrol and diesel engines. However, chiptuning produces best results on turbocharged or supercharged engines. Raising the turbocharger or supercharger boost pressure, allows for much higher gains in power to be achieved, when combined with the correct ignition timing and fueling adjustments. Normally aspirated (non-turbo) engines will only gain a significant improvement in power if the manufacturer also offers the same engine in a significantly de-tuned state by ECU software alone. A top car recently remapped and tuned is this stunning 2019 BMW X3 X-Drive with the 2.0 Turbo Diesel engine with 190 bhp and 400 Nm of torque as standard. It is the customers fourth car that we have remapped for him over the years, and he wanted to have the engine remapped and tuned to optimize the engine and improve the power and torque like his others.
He called us out to his home and the tuning work was completed within two hours, and the result was a modest increase of 30 bhp and 40 Nm of torque, taking the already quite powerful 2.0 engine safely to 220 bhp and 440 Nm of torque.
The engine ran very smoothly and produced great bottom end power resulting in fewer gear changes through the auto transmission, noticeably improved acceleration with sharper throttle response and overall improved driveability. The harder and quicker acceleration would also make for faster and safer overtaking. Overall, a good family car made great.
With another incredibly happy customer, and all safe for the engine, as we keep all tuning parameters well within the limits of the engine and transmission, and all good for the ITV test, guaranteed. Another big bonus is that a noticeable fuel saving should also be seen with the engine optimization.
