Pub2Pub

Pub2Pub Travel has changed. There was a time when travel meant glamour. It meant Brunel, Stevenson, Younghusband and Livingstone. But not any more. Elegance to blandness.

The ongoing adventures of the people behind the Pub2Pub Expedition - a record-breaking drive from the northernmost pub on the planet, to the southernmost, at the wheel of a classic British sports car... It meant proud ocean liners plying the oceans from Ceylon to Constantinople, and elegant railways sweeping overland to the Orient. It was the rarefied domain of well heeled clientèle, swathed in th

e latest London fashions as they set off on their grand tour. And it meant achieving the impossible against the odds, while never letting one’s style or dignity waver even for a moment. The very word ‘traveller’ has been lost to the masses, diluted by a thousand grimy hostels and dreadlocked wanderers. Once, there was the majestic audacity of the journey; now a thousand anodyne Boeings sweep their cargoes blandly across the globe. The infinite allure of the unknown has been banished by tick-list tourism and off-the-shelf adventures. Bespoke has given way to budget. Panache has been swept away by humdrum. But it doesn’t have to be like this. There is still a place in this world for the lost art of travel. Because while the golden age of travel may have passed, its spirit still exists. A spirit of conviction that travel goes far beyond simply visiting a place; it should be a stylish expression of how life should be lived – bold, daring, elegant and stylish; and with just a hint of glorious madness. This is the rationale behind 80breakdown’s latest project, the forthcoming pub2pub expedition – a very British blend of elegance and eccentricity. A 24,000 mile overland journey from the northernmost bar on the planet, to the southernmost. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, across oceans, continents and cultures; travelling by grand touring car, kayak, yacht and ocean liner. All undertaken with a style and panache which harks back to that glorious age when travel was an art form.

Summer's here! So, let's talk about next winter...

Snowstorm '27 is now open for entries, so if you fancy kicking off next year with an utterly epic trip through the Arctic winter, feel free to get in touch. Full details here:

Or, if a week-long Scottish winter adventure is more your glass of whisky, then there's always Scotchstorm. Here's the info on this one:

Or do them both, if you wish. Because let's face it, life is all about the living, and living doesn't get much better than an epic road trip or two...

After returning home from a brace of Pub2Pub chateau breaks this weekend, today we seized the opportunity for a session in the workshop. Which reminds us, we've not done a workshop update for a while. So, here we go...

Firstly, the Mini has acquired a new engine which, after changing all the obvious seals and giving it some TLC, we fitted today. This change is due to the fact that since the Mini's return from the Aracama Desert, the old engine was never quite right, even after a rebuild. Despite chasing issues for months, we suspect the 2,500 miles the old engine covered across Chile, Argentina and Uruguay with compromised pistion rings and head gasket has caused some deep-seated issues, and so we're now trying our luck with a clean slate 998. Hopefully, we'll be firing up Daisy the Mini's new motor soon, and getting some miles on it before refitting the supercharger.

The TVR is getting there too, with only a few things left to do before turning the key - namely, fitting the fuel tank, finishing the brakes, adding fluids and giving everything a thorough check over before reconnecting the battery and turning the key. So, the end of Kermit's multi-year, body-off nut and bolt restoration is just around the corner.

Finally, a mechanical test gauge has showed the Volvo 240's oil pressure issues to be non-existant - the pressure is actually fine. It seems there's a wiring short somewhere behind the dash which was causing the warning light to flicker, so we'll be getting onto this soon. And this means the Volvo should be back in its role as Pub2Pub support vehicle for the next trip, taking over from the temporary Rover cabriolet stand-in.

So, all three cars which need work are approaching completion, just as we roll into the summer - happy days!

Homeward bound.

We're now crossing the channel for the fourth time in 14 days, as we return to the UK with the TVR Car Club's Hampshire region following their chateau trip.

While we're going to miss life on the road for a while, heading to the workshop in the coming weeks to spend some quality time with the Mini, TVR and the Classicline Volvo 240 will be most welcome...

Tops down for summer...

Our Rover cabriolet temporary support vehicle is continuing to provide sterling service, and has now notched up 7,500 miles since we bought it around 11 weeks ago, with most of the miles being covered in the course of the four seperate Euro-trips we've taken it on.

In fact, since buying it we've spent more time on the road living out of its boot, than we have at home. So, we're certainly getting our moneysworth from it.

However, don't dispair, Volvo fans! The trusty Classicline 240 is pretty much back to full health, and will be returning to Pub2Pub support duties in the summer. So, while it's been fun nipping around Europe in the random Rover, normal service will be resumed shortly...

Life is good.

Following a glorious drive over from Brittany, the TVRCC Hampshire crew are now all settled in to the wonderful Chateau de Courtomer, in the rolling Normandy countryside.

So, all's set for four days of living like French sirs, in our spectacular country pad. And that's a prospect we certainly can't complain about...
