Partnership delivers impact.

Today’s graduation ceremony at the CFAO Mobility Training Centre demonstrated what can be achieved when government, international cooperation, the private sector, humanitarian actors and refugees work towards a shared objective.

Sixteen refugees received certificates and start-up kits after completing professional training in automotive repair and maintenance. They were joined by family members, refugee leaders, government authorities, the representative of the Embassy of Japan, UNHCR and other partners.

This programme combines the enabling leadership of the Government of Cameroon, the support of the Government of Japan, the commitment of Toyota Tsusho Corporation and the technical expertise of CFAO Mobility Cameroon.

Together, these contributions are helping refugees acquire market-relevant skills and move towards employment, entrepreneurship and economic independence.

The next step is to build on this model, connect more graduates to decent work and expand opportunities for refugees and host communities.

« La prise en compte des réfugiés commence dans la commune. »

À Yaoundé, le Ministère de la Décentralisation et du Développement Local et le HCR ont présenté leur plan de travail conjoint visant à mieux intégrer les besoins des réfugiés dans les plans et budgets des collectivités territoriales décentralisées.
La rencontre a réuni des maires, des représentants du Gouvernement, des partenaires techniques et financiers, ainsi que des réfugiés. Elle a permis de souligner le rôle essentiel des communes et des régions dans la promotion de l’inclusion socioéconomique et la recherche de solutions durables.

Le Gouvernement a appelé les partenaires à renforcer leur appui aux collectivités engagées en faveur d’un développement local inclusif, résilient et bénéfique aussi bien aux réfugiés qu’aux communautés qui les accueillent.

Better data for stronger refugee protection

More than 3,200 adult refugees were enrolled for biometric Identity cards during a six-day operation at the Douala V Municipal Council in Bonamoussadi.

Led by the General Delegation for National Security, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Relations and with UNHCR’s support, the exercise brought government services closer to refugees living in Cameroon’s economic capital.

Accurate and up-to-date information strengthens the identification of refugees’ needs and supports more informed protection responses. In a highly mobile urban environment like Douala, reaching over 3,200 people in six days reflects the importance of community engagement and cooperation among authorities, humanitarian actors and refugee communities.

UNHCR sincerely appreciates the Douala V Municipal Council for providing an accessible and suitable venue, as well as the security personnel whose support helped ensure that the operation was completed safely, with no incidents reported.

This joint effort demonstrates what strong partnerships can achieve: more accessible services, better information and stronger protection for refugees.

In Cameroon’s Far North, humanity is a collective act

Humanitarian action saves lives. It brings protection and assistance to people affected by conflict, displacement and other crises—often in difficult and insecure environments.

To mark World Humanitarian Day 2026, humanitarian workers, local authorities and communities came together in Maroua around a shared message: we must all .

Activities included a friendly football match and solidarity march symbolizing teamwork; an exhibition bringing humanitarian action closer to the public; a theatrical performance promoting humanitarian values; and a round-table discussion on the challenges and priorities facing the Far North. The Representative of the Governor also visited the exhibition stands in recognition of humanitarian work across the region.

These moments reflected a powerful truth: responding to humanitarian needs requires solidarity, dialogue and strong partnerships with authorities, national and local actors, and the communities we serve.

Humanitarian workers help protect dignity and save lives. They must be respected, protected and supported.

Across Cameroon, humanitarian workers provide critical, life-saving protection and assistance to nearly 500,000 refugees and more than 1 million internally displaced people.

From the Far North to the East, Adamawa, North-West and South-West regions—and in urban areas—humanitarian teams work alongside national and local partners to reach people in need, often despite insecurity, access constraints and limited resources.

On , we honour their courage, dedication and service. Humanitarian workers must be protected, and international humanitarian law must be respected.

Hier, une étape importante a été franchie dans le renforcement du système national d’asile au Cameroun.

Au Tribunal de grande instance du Mfoundi, à Yaoundé, les membres de la Commission nationale d’éligibilité et de la Commission nationale des recours ont prêté serment, avant leur entrée en fonction prévue en septembre.

Ces commissions seront chargées d’examiner les demandes d’asile et les recours, contribuant ainsi à garantir aux personnes en quête de protection internationale l’accès à des procédures justes et efficaces.

« Nous devons maintenant nous mettre au travail, car de nombreuses personnes déracinées attendent et ne doivent pas attendre trop longtemps. Nous devons agir avec humanité et accueillir dignement toutes celles et tous ceux qui ont été contraints de fuir », a déclaré le Professeur Marcelin Nguele Abada.

Alors que la responsabilité de la détermination du statut de réfugié est progressivement transférée aux autorités nationales compétentes, le HCR continuera d’apporter son appui technique, de renforcer les capacités des acteurs concernés et de mettre son expertise à disposition, tout en participant aux travaux des commissions en qualité d’observateur.

Le HCR félicite le Gouvernement du Cameroun pour cette avancée et réaffirme son engagement à travailler aux côtés des institutions nationales pour assurer la protection des réfugiés et des demandeurs d’asile.

On International Youth Day, we celebrate the courage, creativity and leadership of young refugees, internally displaced people and members of the communities that welcome them across Cameroon.

Despite the challenges of displacement, young people are building businesses, advancing peace, supporting their communities and creating solutions for a better future.

UNHCR works with the Government of Cameroon and partners to protect their rights and expand access to education, skills, livelihoods and opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Ce week-end à Bafoussam, les institutions publiques, les communes et les partenaires se sont réunis pour capitaliser les résultats du projet PESoP, mis en œuvre par la GIZ et le HCR avec le soutien de l’Allemagne🇩🇪.

Le projet a notamment permis d’enregistrer 32 696 personnes déplacées internes, de former plus de 175 agents et de renforcer les capacités des communes pour une gestion durable des données et une meilleure inclusion des PDI et des communautés d’accueil.

Merci à l’Allemagne, au Gouvernement du Cameroun, à la GIZ, aux communes et à tous les partenaires engagés.

At the Gado-Badzéré refugee settlement in eastern Cameroon, Fatou, a 54-year-old refugee from the Central African Republic, has become a role model in the production of eco-friendly charcoal. Through this activity, she helps protect the environment while strengthening the economic independence of refugee women.

After fleeing violence in her home country and losing her husband during the conflict, Fatou rebuilt her life in Cameroon, where she now raises two adopted children. In 2014, she was trained by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), a UNHCR partner, in the production of eco-friendly charcoal briquettes. What began as a practical alternative to traditional charcoal soon became a passion and a livelihood.

“Even after LWF left, I continued sharing my skills and knowledge I had gained with other women. Several groups have since been trained,” she explained.

Today, the charcoal produced by Fatou and her women's group is sold across markets in Cameroon’s East Region. “The income helps members meet essential household needs, pay school fees, and invest in other activities such as farming and the production of improved cookstoves,” she added.

Made from dry grass twigs and cassava residues, the eco-friendly charcoal provides both economic and environmental benefits. By reducing reliance on firewood and traditional charcoal, it helps limit tree cutting around the refugee settlement, contributing to the preservation of local ecosystems and biodiversity. The initiative also promotes the adoption of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions among refugees and host communities.

Over the years, Fatou has turned this activity into a powerful tool for socio-economic inclusion. Her group is now recognized across the region and regularly participates in trade fairs and exhibitions, including the recent , creating new opportunities for market access and growth.

In Cameroon, the Government, UNHCR and partners continue to support refugees' socio-economic inclusion and self-reliance while fostering peaceful coexistence and shared opportunities with host communities.
