Love this pretend food set. In our house its been used to make pretend picnics, play grocery store, feed toy babies and even as a teething toy 🤷. 💘 this set stands the test of time which is why it made the cut as one of #emilyspicks at the Rocking Horse Owen Sound. Find this and other great Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers. #buylocal #OwenSound

Happy day 1 of your advent calendar! If you don't have one yet, consider a toy calendar like the LEGO, Playmobil, or Schleich calendars. We put ours away after the holidays and bring it back out as part of our decorations.... and we play with it again. Great for pretend play, taking turns (everyone wants the sleigh) and this morning I even used it for some articulation practice with my son! Check out The Rocking Horse Owen Sound if you haven't got yours yet! Maybe you'll even get a deal to reward your procrastination 😁

Lately my little ones can't get enough of these magnetic letters. They use them to practice their letter sounds, to write words. We also use them to talk about how the letter p can flip and turn into a d. Don't have a magnetic fridge? Add a white board to your wall!

Want to help your toddler learn colors?

Instead of saying: "Get the red ball."
Try: "Get the ball that's red."

No, it may not roll off your tongue quite as easily or naturally, but using the color word AFTER the object helps kids learn colors best. Give it a try :-)

Love reading this book and The Hanen Centre had a neat review with tips on reading it to encourage language comprehension :) #books #literacy

The better your child understands the stories he hears, the easier it will be for him to read and write stories on his own later. That’s exactly where reading comprehension comes in! Take a look at this Book Nook on how you could use The Gruffalo to encourage story comprehension.

I'm not alone in my screen time fears!

"Children are holding crayons and scissors less and making fewer things with their hands," she said.

"We've noticed that sometimes, even if you pass a pencil or a paintbrush to a child, they're not quite sure how to receive it and how to hold it."

This trend is very concerning!

My #1 speech client (aka my son) works like mad to play his pop game. With 30 mins to work, we got 120 attempts of his "special sound". Keeping special toys aside that only come out for speech drills helps to prolong their interest in a game.

New (and timely) research on classroom decorations just in time for #backtoschool

"Highly-decorated classrooms are more of a distraction than an aid to learning. This has been found to be particularly so for children in the early primary years, and children with special learning needs."

This game is amazing for language development. Kids spend much of their 3rd year peppering adults with questions, (Why, why, but why mom, why?). This is usually just their way of keeping the conversation going. As they get older, they need to know how to ask and answer more complicated questions. Why do I 💘 this game? The better you are at scanning the board, fitting things into categories, and asking questions, the more likely you are to win! Look for games like this in my SLP approved gift list coming soon!

Clients often ask if there's an App to treat their child's speech and language difficulties or to help their kids get a head start on talking. Although there is a time and place for Apps, they really can't replace human interaction, especially with late takers. Get your children's screen time as close to zero as you can!

Encouraging Joint Engagement with Children with ASD

I 💘 this article about the importance of sharing fun together. Laughter and fun are the best rewards for parents, kids and therapists!

"If you are playful when you join in, it’s more likely the child will enjoy himself and want to keep the interaction going. He’ll also realize that including people while he plays with objects can be really fun!"

Joint engagement happens when an adult and child interact together while focusing on the same object. Research shows a strong link between a child's communication development and the amount of time they spend in joint engagement with adults. Find out how you can encourage joint engagement with child...

Spending time face to face matters! From starting to talk, to learning new sounds, for social communication and hearing loss.... any time we communicate we rely on information that is "written" on each other's faces. So get down with your kids or pick them up to get the most out of communication!

A common strategy I recommend to families in my work as a Speech-language pathologist is to “limit asking questions”.

Changing your communication to limit questions will help you enjoy sharing the experience. It reduces pressure to communicate, and most importantly, it changes the dynamic from tester to companion.

There’s a catch though – it can be hard work! It’s human nature to fill the gaps with talk – and when we feel that someone is communicating less than we think they can we start to pepper them with questions to “draw out” information.

Limiting your questions will help your child to enjoy communicating with you and result in more communication attempts from them than questions ever will.
