In 1987, Grant and Susan Johnson first hit the road on their RTW motorcycle travels, north-to-south, two-up on a 1986 BMW R80GS - an adventure that spanned 13 years. In 1997, they launched Horizons Unlimited to inspire, inform, and connect like-minded travellers who want to make their adventure dreams a reality. Horizons Unlimited exists on this simple philosophy:

Is it our imagination or are we feeling especially thirsty after seeing these desert vistas? Thirsty for adventure, that is!😆

"The vastness of the Uyuni Salt Flats is impossible to capture in a photo. You think that after seeing thousands of images from other travelers you understand the scale, but it’s only when you’re standing there that you truly feel it - that sense of being small and lost in nature’s grand work. Of course, that feeling only lasts until you get into trouble. In an instant, the peace of the horizon can turn dangerous, and the very remoteness that felt like freedom starts to feel oppressive. Nature is beautiful, but it demands both preparedness and respect."

Some camp sites just hit the right spot, day or night! Nice find!

"Baja California 🇲🇽 we made it finally to Mexico, border crossing was fine it just took 1,5h just because of the paperworks 😅 Sven doesn‘t speak spanish, I had spanish in school 3 years but thats already 10 years ago and back then I wasn‘t really good and haven‘t paid attention 🥸😂 well its better than nothing and so far it helped a lot already.

We are heading more south to visit some friends and at their winter camp near La Paz. 🥳

So far we enjoy the good weather and beaches ☀️🌊"

Coming to HU FRANCE
18-20 septembre, 2026

Meet DAMIEN LEPRETRE! What would you think about his adventure photos here? This is a first: we confess we don't have any info about him(!)😂, but we know he'll be there and it's certainly one way to make you interested in what he's preparing to share at the event.

Do you recognize the sign? Does that mountain range ring a bell?

The last day for advance online registration is tomorrow (jeudi, 10 septembre) for the last chance to save some gas money. After that, show up and check in at the Registration Area upon arrival. We'd love to have you join the fun all weekend!

"Madagascar étais un pays qui me faisait rêver depuis longtemps. En Octobre 2025;ce rêve s'est enfin concrétisé. Avec deux amies de longue date, Jean-Pierre et Jean-Marie, nous avons décidé de partir à l'aventure sur la Grande Ile. Notre terrain de jeu: le sud-ouest de Madagascar. Notre fil conducteur: la mythique RN7 Au guidon de nos petites motos, nous avons parcouru prés de 2000 km à travers des paysages d'une diversité incroyable, des baobabs majestueux, des odeurs inoubliables...

Partout ou nous sommes passés, nous avons été accueillis avec gentillesse. Des sourires, des regards toujours présents, malgré des conditions de vie souvent difficiles. Une leçon d'humilité. Dans un Monde ou tout va vite, Madagascar m'a rappelé l'essentiel. Ce voyage ne restera pas une parenthèse. Aujourd'hui je suis prêt à repartir. L'Aventure Continue!"

HU AUSTRIA MINI MEET
10-13 September 2026

Do a final check on your bike and gear now. It's almost time to ride to HU Austria 2026!

Presenters XENIA SAEGESSER and MARTIN STREBEL (... a travel-bug-infected couple and our brilliant HU Switzerland organizers) spent over three years travelling the world on two XT660 Yamahas. Here, they bring the sweet, dusty stories of "Riding the Beautiful Silk Road" portion of their travels.

For one unforgettable year, Xenia and "Tinu" rode along the Silk Road across many borders, climbed high into the Himalayas, and found flow along the iconic Pamir Highway. Some of their experiences were pretty surreal. Were they desert hallucinations? Hear their stories firsthand by coming to HU Austria!

Let's just say we've never seen anyone more gleeful to approach Death Road...?? Looks like they danced with Fate and are on their way to more adventure! Also: a safety hint to anyone bicycling it.

"The infamous Death Road in Bolivia 🇧🇴

Built in the 1930s and known for its dangerous conditions. Many sections have no guardrails and sheer drops of hundreds of meters. Before a safer alternative route was opened in 2006, this route claimed 200-300 lives per year.

Today it's mainly used for adventure tourism (mostly bicycles). All heavy transit is now banned from the Death Road.

Traffic rule: All vehicles drive on the left side (not like standard Bolivian traffic) so you can better see how close tires are to the cliff edge going down.

Interestingly enough though, tour operators don't seem to let the mountain bikers know about this so tons of bikers came around blind corners on our side of the road when we rode uphill."

HU AUSTRIA MINI MEET
10-13 September 2026
It's coming up fast!

Presenter UDO BEICHLER's nerve-wracking 54 000 km adventure from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego was balanced with warm encounters with extraordinary people along the way. Incredible views and supreme examples of humanity made the extremes in temperatures and altitudes worthwhile.

Alaska-to-Argentina is almost a rite of passage for every overlander, yet no one has ever experienced it in the same way. Udo's trip is no exception. You'll want to hear it in person.

(This talk will be presented in German.)
