International Waffle Day is on March 25 and celebrates waffles, their history, and a surprising religious holiday. A holiday that is best celebrated by eating waffles is our kind of holiday. Unsurprisingly the day has become a bit of a hit. It was originally celebrated in Sweden but now eager stomachs all over the world embrace International Waffle Day. Plug in your waffle maker and tuck into some mouth-watering treats.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WAFFLE DAY
Waffles came to Sweden near the early 1600s and quickly spread to nearby lands. They were often eaten with jams and fruits, establishing themselves as a beloved treat to be eaten at all times of the day. The event in celebration of them was called Våffeldagen which sounded remarkably close to the religious Vårfrudagen and the traditions merged.
As time passed a wider variety of waffles emerged. They became sweeter in the 1700s after more butter and sugar were added to the recipes. In 1839, the Belgian waffle was created much thicker than regular waffles and with deeper grids. The Belgian variation was more filling and held more jam and cream too.
International Waffle Day itself is the result of a mispronunciation that brought two holidays together. In Sweden, this Waffle Day is known as Våffeldagen, which sounded a lot like Vårfrudagen (Our Lady Day), a day that celebrated the Virgin Mary’s conception. Because of this lingual connection, it became customary for Swedish families to celebrate Vårfrudagen with waffles on Our Lady Day. That’s how International Waffle Day ended up being celebrated on March 25.

PALM SUNDAY
Palm Sunday, which takes place on the Sunday before Easter, is a significant day in the Christian Calendar and marks the beginning of the Holy Week.
Palm Sunday is a moveable feast, which means the date changes every year. Also known as Passion Sunday, this has rich symbolism, traditions, and deep spiritual meaning as it commemorates Jesus Christ's arrival at the city of Jerusalem as told in the Bible in all four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Palm Sunday is named because people in the Bible welcomed Jesus by waving palm branches when he entered Jerusalem.
The final part of Lent in Western Christianity begins with Palm Sunday, a time of serious reflection and preparation. In the East, Holy Week is preceded by a longer period of Lent.

PUPPY DAY
The purpose of this day is not only to celebrate puppies but to shed light on the cruelty that happens in puppy mills and encourage adoption from overcrowded shelters.

HISTORY OF PUPPY DAY
This day was created in 2006 by animal expert and behaviorist, author Colleen Paige. She is also credited with being the inventor of many other pet-related holidays. Paige believed that there needed to be a day to bring awareness to the abusive practices taking place in puppy mills, and to the fact that there are many abandoned dogs in need of adoption and loving families.

Pi Day falls on March 14, aligning with the American date format of 3/14. The significance lies in the fact that 3.14 represents the initial three digits of Pi.
If you are a lover of mathematics then you can take your celebration of Pi Day to the next level by celebrating at exactly 1:59 (a.m. or p.m.) and then your representation of Pi will be even more exact, happening at 3.14159.

THE DEFINITION OF PI
The word Pi comes from the Greek word perimetros, which means circumference, and the Greek letter has been used to represent it since the 18th century.
Archimedes of Syracuse was the first one to calculate the value of Pi. He was the greatest mathematician of ancient times who determined the area of a circle by using the Pythagorean theorem.
It is now an essential part of calculations in numerous fields such as engineering, construction, and physics.

But what is pi? The answer is simpler than you think.
Pi is a circle's circumference divided by its diameter.
But what's remarkable is that no matter the size of the circle you are measuring, that ratio of circumference to diameter will always equal 3.1415926535897, usually shortened to 3.14.
Divide the circumference of a tennis ball by its diameter and you get 3.14. Divide the circumference of the planet Mars by its diameter and you get 3.14. Divide the circumference of the known universe by its diameter (assuming it's a perfect circle or sphere)
As one mathematician put it, "Pi is part of the nature of the circle. If the ratio was different, it wouldn't be a circle."
Pi is a fascinating number that is important to all sorts of mathematical calculations. The circumference of a circle divided by its diameter will always equal pi.

K9 Veterans is an unofficial day designated to honour the many dogs who are members of the military. This year we recognize our 4-legged team members on March 13th. The partnership between man and dog has been documented for centuries and use of dogs in wartime dates as far back as the mid-7th century. The United States K9 Corp was created on March 13, 1942 when dogs were officially adopted into US military ranks during WWII.

Canada, like many countries, has a long history of using dogs, horses and even carrier pigeons in war. That includes the use of sniffer dogs in Afghanistan to find improvised explosive devices, which were responsible for the majority of Canadian deaths during the decade-long mission.
As integral as those dogs were considered to the Canadian war effort in Afghanistan, they were owned and handled by contractors hired by the military specifically for the task — contracts that expired when the mission ended.
The military’s experience with dogs wasn’t over, however. In fact, it was just beginning, said Capt. Jamie Donovan of Canadian Special Forces Command.
“Canadian special forces gleaned much from allies in Afghanistan in the employment of canines in support of special-operations forces, and were themselves using canines on operations by the end of that mission, Following Afghanistan and since 2012, we’ve aimed to further develop and sustain a canine capability within the command.”
Regardless of which side of the border these 4-legged heroes work for they have the same temperaments in common: bold, confident attitude, no signs of shyness or over-aggression and the ability to work with people, a strong drive to hunt and retrieve and an ‘implicit ability’ to fight if required. They were also forbidden from showing any fear of water, any propensity to bite their handler during stressful moments, and needed to “show no fear and not be distracted by unsure footing, tight and/or dark enclosed spaces, moving vehicles and loud noises, including gunfire.
