⚠️ Don’t Let Your RV Batteries Freeze & Explode!

This customer happened to be lucky that the damage was minimal.

Did you know that deep-cycle RV batteries can freeze and even explode if they’re not properly maintained in cold weather? When a lead-acid battery is discharged, the electrolyte turns into mostly water, increasing the risk of freezing. A frozen battery can crack, leak acid, or even burst! Leading to potentially massive damage!

How to Prevent Battery Damage:
✅ Keep them charged – A fully charged lead-acid battery is much less likely to freeze.
✅ Disconnect & store indoors – If you’re not using your RV, remove the batteries and store them in a warm, dry place.
✅ Use a battery maintainer – A trickle charger or solar panel can help keep them topped up.

Winter camping or living in your RV during cold weather? Here are some key tips to keep you warm and your RV protected from the elements:

❄️ Insulate & Seal – Check for drafts around windows, doors, and vents. Use weather stripping, foam insulation, and thermal curtains to keep the cold out.

🔥 Protect Your Plumbing – Frozen pipes are a nightmare! Use heat tape on exposed water lines, insulate your hose, and keep cabinets open to let warm air circulate around plumbing.

🛻 Keep Your RV Warm – Use an efficient heat source like your propane furnace, ceramic space heaters, or a diesel heater. A heated blanket can also go a long way on chilly nights!

💨 Manage Condensation – Cold weather means more moisture inside. Crack a window slightly and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorbers to prevent mold and mildew.

⛽ Check Your Batteries & Propane – Cold drains batteries faster, so keep them charged. Always have extra propane on hand for heating and cooking.

🧊 Protect Your Tanks – Keep your black and grey tanks from freezing with RV tank heaters or by adding RV antifreeze. Never leave your dump valves open in freezing temps!

🏕️ Skirt Your RV – A simple RV skirt or insulated panels can block cold air from getting underneath, keeping your floors warmer and reducing heat loss.

Are you maintaining your deep cycle batteries correctly?

Two facts you need to know about maintaining your battery's health:

1. Fully discharging your deep cycle battery will drastically reduce its life.

2. Deep cycle batteries slowly discharge even when they're not in use.

Here are some tips for maintaining your battery and extending its life:

➡️ Ensure you have ample and functioning charging systems (shore power, solar, engine, etc.).

➡️ If you go long periods of time without using your batteries, it is best to have them on a trickle charger.
Maintain the fluids of your battery cells by checking the fluid levels every month or so and, when necessary, topping them up.

➡️Install a battery monitor.
