Sounds unbelievable? General Motors is making it clear that the future of the auto industry isn’t just about selling cars — it’s about selling services. Subscriptions like OnStar and Super Cruise are already generating billions in revenue — and growing faster than the car market itself.
👉 In 2025, GM reported $2.7 billion in service revenue and $5.4 billion in deferred revenue — a massive jump compared to 2020.
👉 Around 13 million users are already subscribed, each generating about $20 per month.
The idea is simple: the car becomes a service platform — with navigation, remote access, Wi-Fi, and even hands-free driving. Looking ahead, GM aims to go further with “eyes-off” systems, allowing drivers to take their eyes off the road in certain conditions.
👉 Most importantly, these services can reach margins of up to 70% — far higher than traditional car sales.
This could completely reshape the automotive business model. Cars are no longer a one-time purchase — they’re becoming a long-term subscription.
