Lighting tower repair today.

Arrived on site with a job list to replace a starter motor that had already been pre diagnosed. The customer didn’t have time to complete the repair so I attended site to get it sorted.

Replaced the starter motor and carried out further electrical checks before putting the unit back into service.

During testing I found another issue. The main battery isolator had developed a high resistance connection and was getting extremely hot under load. This was causing a significant voltage drop which was contributing to the starter motor failure.

Replaced the isolator and restored proper voltage to the starter circuit.

Another machine back up and running.

Another lighting tower repair while I’m out on site.

This one came up with a battery/alternator charging fault. When the hydraulic pump was used to lift the mast or adjust the stabiliser legs the battery voltage would collapse right down to around 8 volts which was triggering the fault.

Tracked it back to a failed main battery. Under load the battery simply couldn’t hold voltage which caused the charging system alarm to appear.

Tested alternator output with the multimeter and clamp meter and confirmed the charging system itself was working correctly once the battery issue was sorted.

Just another reminder that sometimes a charging fault isn’t the alternator at all.

When you rock up and the whole dash is already on the seat 😅

Toyota Prado came in after the keys were lost. Immobiliser needed replacing… but the dash had already been stripped to get to it.

What I walked into was a full interior pull-down.

✔️ Reassembled and refitted the entire dash properly
✔️ Secured and checked all wiring
✔️ Immobiliser sorted
✔️ Installed new spot lights
✔️ Fitted new UHF radio
✔️ Fully tested and signed off

Anyone can pull a dash apart. Putting it back together right, with no rattles, no warning lights and no dramas, that’s where experience counts.

Back on the road, starting properly, set up for touring 👌

Another trailer made safe.

The original emergency breakaway unit was hooked up wrong and wasn’t charging the battery at all.

By the time we priced individual parts, it was cheaper and smarter to replace the whole unit.

Installed a new breakaway system and wired in a proper charge feed via the parking light circuit so it charges while driving.

Tested charging voltage.
Tested activation.
Confirmed correct operation.

If that trailer ever disconnects, the brakes will now apply like they’re meant to.

Don’t assume yours works. Most people only find out when it’s too late.

🚙 Sometimes the job starts before the tools come out

This one was a remote call out to a rural property, and getting there meant low range 4WD, bush tracks, ruts, and taking it slow.

The job itself was a no-start fault on an Antonio Carraro 770 tractor.
The owner asked about replacing the ignition with a push button start. Easy to do, but not the right way to do it.

Push button starts can bypass factory safety interlocks like neutral start and PTO protection. That’s how machines roll away, get damaged, or hurt someone.

So instead of shortcuts:
• Fault was properly diagnosed
• Keyed ignition kept
• Safety systems left intact
• Machine repaired the correct way

This is the sort of work I do,mobile auto electrical, even when access is rough and the job’s off the beaten track.

If it’s remote, rural, or out in the bush that’s not a problem.

🚨 Brake Controller Upgrade, Safety Comes First

Today I removed an old Hayes/Reese brake controller and installed a Redarc Tow-Pro Elite after the owner reported random brake issues while towing.

Once I got into it, the cause became obvious.

The existing wiring was unsafe:
• Undersized cable for the load
• Poor joins and repairs
• Old wiring stacked on top of old wiring
• No consideration for voltage drop or braking demand

This was a dual-axle caravan with four electric brake magnets, yet it had been wired using 3 mm twin. That cable is simply not adequate for the load.

That’s not just bad workmanship, that’s dangerous.

Electric trailer brakes are a primary safety system. If they don’t apply correctly, you lose braking performance. Best case: erratic braking. Worst case: a runaway caravan, jack-knife, or a serious accident.

People pay for this work unknowingly, trusting that it’s been done properly. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

What was done today:
• Old controller removed
• All dodgy wiring removed
• Faulty and undersized cables replaced
• Correct cable size installed for the load
• New Redarc Tow-Pro Elite installed correctly
• System tested and verified under load

This isn’t about brand or selling parts, it’s about doing the job safely and doing it once.

If you tow a caravan, horse float, or trailer and you’re experiencing:
• Random braking
• Pulsing or grabbing brakes
• Controller lights doing strange things

👉 Don’t ignore it.

 Quick trailer brake controller check

We wanted to test and confirm the electric brake controller was working correctly.
This is a quick and simple confirmation test.

• First, we checked the trailer brake lights to confirm the brake light circuit was working.
• Next, we tested the electric brake service wire with someone holding their foot on the brake.
• The controller k**b was then wound from 0–10 while watching the test light go from dim to bright, confirming the controller is varying output correctly.
• You’ll see this test confirmed twice in the video.

Important: do not assume chassis earth.
Make sure the test light earth is connected to the same earth as the trailer plug, unless you know 100% the trailer circuit is chassis-grounded.

Simple check. Clear result.

This Mitsubishi Canter presented with a non operational cabin heater fan.

Although the blower motor had been replaced previously, further diagnosis showed the motor had seized and the fan speed switch and resistor contacts were heat damaged. When a blower motor starts to drag or seize, it draws excessive current, which can overheat the wiring, switch, and resistor, leading to repeat failures.

This is a common issue on this style of heater/evaporator box, as the blower motor sits upside down. Over time, condensation, dust, and debris settle inside the motor housing, contaminating the bearings and eventually causing the fan to seize.

In this case, the blower motor, fan speed switch, and resistor circuit were replaced, and the system was tested across all fan speeds to confirm correct current draw and reliable operation.

Preventative tip:
If your heater fan becomes noisy, intermittent, or only works on certain speeds, don’t ignore it. Early diagnosis can prevent switch damage, wiring overheating, and more costly repairs down the track.

Intermittent trailer light issues on this camper trailer had the owner scratching their head.

After testing, the problem was traced back to a faulty trailer plug causing poor and inconsistent connections.
Repaired, tested, and sorted so it’s safe and reliable before towing.

These “works sometimes” faults are common with trailers and camper vans and they’re exactly why proper fault-finding matters.

If you’re having issues with trailer lights, plugs, or wiring, give me a shout.

Intermittent trailer light issues on this camper trailer 👀

Tracked it back to a faulty trailer plug causing poor connections.
Repaired, tested, and ready for the road again.

If your trailer or camper lights work “sometimes” that’s usually a wiring or plug issue, not magic.
