About 530pm on Saturday the 28th February 2026 police attached to City East Highway Patrol were participating in Operation Mardi Gras 2026, targeting impaired drivers on City Road Darlington.

Police observed a blue toy motorcycle being ridden by a 15 year old boy with a pillion passenger on the rear riding in lane 1 of 3 of City Road in a southerly direction. On sighting the Roadside testing site ahead the rider turned left into Butlin Avenue where another testing site was operating. The rider was blocked by police and both he and his passenger, who was holding the recently purchased McDonald's, were directed to get off the motorcycle. The passenger complied, however the rider tried to accelerate and take off from police however he was unsuccessful.

The rider stated he had purchased the bike off the internet for $500 with a maximum speed of 47km/h.

The Young Persons parents were contacted and advised before being dealt with under the Young Offenders Act. An application will be put before the court to have the dangerous and non compliant unregistered motorcycle to be destroyed.
