BROADSPEED UPDATE # 5

Powerunit is complete (was actually built a few years ago) and has been fitted to the body shell to get bonnet clearance correct.

* 1293cc
* Original ARDEN (not reproduction) alloy 8 port cylinder head (unmodified)
* 10.25-1, 266 Camshaft, 1.3 Rockers,
* "SpecialTuning" Lite flywheel assembly, orange diaphragm
* MK I "333" transmission
* EN40 MK I crank/ Balanced bottom end
* Re-curved MK I distributor

Recently all ancillaries were added and the engine put on the engine Dyno. We used a very short inlet and weber trumpet to squeeze under the bonnet which ultimately hurt our figures. But we still reached the 100HP and more importantly 100 ft pounds of torque. Very happy!

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK…

I took my tired old wheezing Mk 1 Mini to Andrew and he transformed it into a completely different car with a rip snorting engine, razor sharp handling and a snappy gearshift. It hoots, it snorts, it flies. It is now an absolute thrill to drive and I can’t stop grinning. If you want your car to be the very best it can be, let Andrew fix it for you. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

BROADSPEED UPDATE # 3

Photograph of the original doors that came with the Broadspeed. Colour we believe was Castrol Green.

Second photo shows that there is not much difference in height compared to the standard - it’s more the rake of the front windscreen that changes.

Beautiful 1970’s Mini Clubman in for Clutch work and also aterrible squeak in the front end. Removed 1980’s modified power control arm to find home made nolathane type bush - without a steel sleeve fitted! Standard MSC / Whiteline bushes do not fit lower arm. These are typical type issues we find on customers classic cars in 2026.

Welcome to the restoration journey of a very special car….. A Genuine MINI BROADSPEED.

This Australian Broadspeed Mini is a project car Andrew has owned since the the early 1990’s and has been gathering parts for it ever since. We have finally had some time to get into the restoration after finishing a customers U.K. Pick-Up and Andrew’s new Group N Historic Touring Car Cooper S, which was finished in late 2025.

Andrew initially bought the Broadspeed as a shell bolted to a well made jig, that the car was originally built on several decades before. Though it came with Aussie doors the car is going to be more along the lines of the U.K. Ralph Broad (coach-built) version.

Powered by an ARDEN alloy headed 1293cc powerunit.

It will be painted Tartan Red with Black trim.

We took a “buck” or “plug” off the original just in case a client decides they too would like a very rare and modified “bespoke” classic Mini derivative. Though the costs involved are well outside the common rebuild of a factory classic car.

We hope you enjoy watching the car evolve and appreciate the skills and dedication of a select few, doing something we really enjoy.

… more pictures to come. Keep checking back

This Mk 1 Cooper S came in to us with an 1100 S block fitted.

Someone had drilled one extra stud hole that was way out! 😳

Thankfully they didn’t attempt to similarly drill (aka. guess) the one near the thermo end 🫣
