I’m a sailor and wooden boat builder, drawn to the quiet charm of clinker planks, salty breezes, and the occasional boat ramp debacle. Episode 4 is now live.

This week I’ve been cruising more of Lake Macquarie, getting to know the boat, learning the systems, finding some beautiful places to stop, and slowly beginning to feel like this new chapter is becoming real.

There’s been sailing, a few small victories, some quiet moments with Millie, and some conversations with people I never expected to meet.

Life doesn’t always go where we planned, and sometimes we find ourselves having to set a completely new course.

That’s really what this episode is about.

How would you rate me on tying up? She’s lying just about north south. The wind is picking up from the north West and gusting to about 17 kn and then backing to Southwest similar strength in the afternoon rise and fall on the tide is about half a metre.

Most folks reckon they’ve got the winch figured out, but they always miss the one crucial step that keeps the line locked down. It’s not just about wrapping it around; it’s about that final cross-over to keep everything secure. Watching a novice try to get the hang of it is a classic reminder that even the simple stuff needs a bit of practice before you're out on the water.

Anyone got a clue what this bit is? Looks like that one pesky bolt you always have left over after building IKEA furniture, doesn’t it? Totally stumped here, so sound off in the comments and help out.

While you're scratching your head, here’s a look at the new boat. Still needs a name—she’s currently ‘Sigfield’ (Victoria Shield), so if you've got any bright ideas for a rename, throw those in the mix too.

Nothing ruins a day on the water quite like a temperamental outboard. Half an hour of swearing later, and it looks like a win—just before the weather turns nasty, of course. This old Honda has seen better days, and by better days, we mean about two decades ago. Sometimes boat life is just battling rust and bad luck.
