Out with the old lever arm shocks, in with a fully adjustable GAZ performance coilover suspension package.

Add in a Fosseway Performance 4 pot big brake upgrade at the same time and driving this little MGB Roadster is completely transformed.

The front end now feels lighter, sharper and far more direct through the steering wheel, while the upgraded suspension gives the car noticeably better stability and confidence through corners. Then there’s the brakes… a huge improvement in stopping power and pedal feel over the original setup.

With the right upgrades, classic cars can still keep all their character while becoming far more enjoyable to drive on modern roads.

If your classic could use some attention, whether it’s repairs, upgrades or a full recommissioning, send us a message to book your car in.

3… 2… 1… and the AE86 is alive.

Getting here wasn’t the smoothest sailing. We had to chase down coil issues, a crank sensor problem and a couple of wiring gremlins along the way. But once it all came together and she finally roared into life… you can probably see why I’m grinning like an idiot in the video.

Still plenty to finish before it’s ready for a proper run, but hearing it fire for the first time is a pivotal moment in any build.

The AE86’s tired, mismatched interior is finally turning a corner.

Most of the plastics have now been re-dyed, along with the rear seats, and it’s amazing how quickly the whole car starts to feel fresher when the colour and finish come back to life.

I thought I’d share a little about the process.

Plastics
Clean. Then clean again. And then once more for luck.
Everything got steam cleaned twice with a citrus cleaner, followed by a proper wipe down with thinners. Interior plastics spend years soaking up protectants and dressings, and if you don’t strip that out properly, the dye simply won’t stick. Prep is everything here.

Seats
Yes, the fabric can be re-dyed, but it needs serious cleaning first, plus plenty of brushing between coats to keep the fibres soft. Skip that step and you end up with seats that feel more like cardboard than cloth.
The vinyl sections get the same treatment as the plastics so the finish matches and holds up.

With progress happening all over the car, it felt like the right time to roll it out of the workshop, give it a proper clean, and grab some updated shots to show where it’s really at. First time you can really see the overall look.

Warning: some viewers may find the following footage disturbing 😂

If messy wiring, stripped interiors and half-finished looms make you nervous, look away now. The AE86 is mid-surgery on the electrical side of thing, with the new fuse panel, relay block and ECU housing mounted to some custom brackets in the passenger footwell… and the engine loom temporarily looking like a bowl of electrical spaghetti.

Having ECU mounted in the cabin instead of the engine bay like the beams would be from the factory means a lot of extra wiring work now, but the payoff is worth it. Better protection from heat, cleaner engine bay, and a more reliable setup long term.

behind-the-scenes isn’t always pretty…

Carpet in an AE86 isn’t exactly peak track spec… and that’s kind of the point.

This car is getting A/C, so proper carpet and insulation will improve the efficiency significantly.

The track is still the place this car will spend most of it’s time, but I’m also building it as a showcase example of our work so it’s leaning more toward “restoration” than “track build” in some areas.

Race car where it counts. Refined AE86 where it matters.

Major progress on the AE86.

Full tear-down for paint, fresh colour laid down, and reassembly finally underway. Starting to look like a car again… and most importantly, Princess Peach is gone for good.

Watch to the end for a sneak peek at the engine direction.

A quick walk-around of the AE86 as purchased. This is the reference point before any changes, fixes, or improvements are made. (Excluding the tail lights)

I’ve recorded it as a voiceover and then had to done some speeding up etc to meet Instagrams reel length limits, so sorry about the quality.

There’s already been some decent progress since this was filmed, but I’ll save that for the next update. If you want to see where it started vs where it’s headed, keep an eye out for the follow-up.

Quick housekeeping while you’re here:

• Chasing a driver’s side rear quarter window trim (AE86). DM me if you’ve got one.
• The side skirts in the video are for sale. Message me if interested.
• Looking to trade good condition red/brown rear seats for good condition blue/grey. Let me know.

More to come. Follow along for the next update. Or if you need help with your classic, send us a message to book in.

We’ve taken over this Trueno AE86 build and the first job is paint.
It’s already been sprayed prior to our ownership, but the new direction is a fair bit more understated.

Something iconic, like the panda, or maybe it goes back to the original metallic silver blue… what do you think?

Nothing glamorous here, just a quick wheel refurb to get rid of the evidence from an unfortunate parking mishap.
This Giulia Veloce wheel was looking a bit worse for wear, but with a little work and a respray it’s now looking as good as new.

Stripped, sanded, and repainted and back on the car.
