After more than 25 years away from offshore racing, Iain Wilcock returned to the water under very different circumstances — joining Flying Fish for the Rolex Sydney to Hobart following a cancer diagnosis.

“The decision wasn’t really about the race itself,” he says. “I needed something structured, something that would keep me focused. Offshore sailing does that — there’s no room for distraction.”

Preparing with Flying Fish in Sydney meant safety drills, man overboard exercises and qualifying passages — building habits that matter when conditions turn difficult.

“Leaving the harbour is the moment it changes. Within minutes you’re in three-metre swell, 20 knots plus, and you settle into that offshore rhythm.”

For Iain, the race wasn’t about drama or big moments.

“It’s about consistency. Clear communication, sticking to process, not overreacting. The boat matters, but how the crew operates matters more.”

Flying Fish and crew went on to finish 3rd in division — proof that solid preparation carries through offshore.
