Chain 1 - Timing chain: Skipped oil change (saves $150) → oil breaks down → deposits build on timing chain guides → chain stretches → engine rattle → timing chain replacement: $1,200–$2,500. Chain 2 - Brake rotors: Skipped brake check → pads wear to bare metal → rotors get damaged → replacement adds $400–$800 on top of what would have been a $150 pad job. We see both of these regularly. The savings from skipping a service are always small. The cost of what it would have caught is almost always much higher.

Before any drive over 2 hours, check these five with clear pass/fail standards:

1) Tyres - PASS: tread above 3mm, pressure within 10% of your door sticker number. FAIL: wear indicators showing, or tyre visibly flat.
2) Brakes - PASS: firm pedal, quiet. FAIL: spongy pedal or grinding.
3) Oil - PASS: between MIN and MAX, amber to brown colour. FAIL: below MIN, or milky/gritty.
4) Coolant - PASS: level between MIN and MAX in the reservoir. FAIL: below MIN or looking rusty.
5) Lights - PASS: all working front and rear. FAIL: any globe out. A fail is a reason to call us - not a reason to stay home.

This week Under the Hood made wheel alignment impossible to ignore.

Post 1 put it simply. One road. Two different tracks. That is what misalignment looks like in real life. Your wheels are not pointing in the same direction, which means your tyres are scrubbing against the road instead of rolling cleanly across it. Uneven tyre wear does not start with a blowout. It starts here.

Post 2 showed you the same problem from above. A top down view of a car where the wheel angles are clearly off. Most drivers will never see their car from this angle. But this is exactly what the alignment machine sees every time a car comes in. Red numbers mean this is happening. Green numbers mean it has been corrected.

Two perspectives. Same problem. And both completely avoidable with a 30 minute alignment check that costs less than a tank of fuel.

If your car pulls to one side, your steering wheel sits slightly off centre while driving straight, or your tyres are wearing unevenly on one edge, your car has already been trying to tell you.
