This might be the ultimate supervillain getaway vehicle.

From car spotting to cow spotting, we recently had the Land Rover Defender OCTA Black in the MCS garage and you can bet we used it WELL.

After the very positive reception to our first OCTA feature, this was a car we specifically wanted to drive - and understand. It has some of the most trick engineering an SUV has ever seen, and was the basis for Defender’s Dakar-winning D7X-R. It also comes at no small premium: the modestly optioned example we tested retails for around $330k. Despite that, we’re spotting them around Melbourne in decent numbers.

We used it around town and, more importantly, found an opportunity to put it in OCTA mode and get it properly dirty on a family member’s farm, which gave us one clear takeaway:

If we were outrunning a supervillain, we’d almost certainly grab the keys to the OCTA. In a weird way, we think it’s the closest thing to the Nolan-era Batmobile on the market. Its height, fat tyres, and the knowledge that a closely related version just won its class at Dakar give it a satisfying sense of invincibility.

Its hydraulically interlinked 6D Dynamics suspension can raise it to a maximum 323mm of ground clearance, so if anything’s in the way you can just drive over it (it would make light work of most of the cars we spotted during our time with it, it has to be said).

And then the same suspension keeps a 2.6-tonne Defender remarkably composed when you point it at a corner.

Once through the corner, its 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 launches it scarily fast towards the next one; 0–100km/h takes just 4.0 seconds.

And that might be the OCTA’s greatest trick: the sheer breadth of what it can do. There are (only slightly) faster SUVs, more luxurious SUVs, and probably more capable dedicated off-roaders, but we’re struggling to think of another that covers all those bases quite like this.

Just spotted in Richmond this morning, we believe this is Melbourne’s third Aston Martin Valhalla.

Not bad for a car limited to just 999 examples worldwide, and this one’s bold colour but otherwise understated spec is a treat.
