Hello Moto

When you travel at a speed faster than the surrounding traffic your risk is going to increase. This is magnified in poor light conditions. Other road users can only give way to motorcyclists if they can see them. The rider was in the blind spot of the driver of the car that changes lanes ahead. The rider never anticipated , the rider predicted no one would make a lane change. Bad choice.
Good riding is about having enough time to make good choices.

Everything was going well and as predicted until it didnt.

You should always have enough clear distance and vision ahead to be able to see, understand and stop.
As road users we have to expect others to make mistakes and its our job to not get involved in that mistake.

Drive and ride safely.

These are the facts.

During 2020 there were 54 motorcyclist fatalities in Queensland. This represents 19% of the 277 lives lost on Queensland roads in 2020, and is 20% higher than the number of motorcyclist fatalities in 2019.

The majority of the 54 motorcyclist lives lost were male, and just over a quarter were aged 25 to 29.

Major contributing factors for motorcyclist fatalities in 2020 include:
drivers/riders disobeying road rules (74%)
speeding drivers/riders (30%)
drink drivers/riders (26%)
crashes involving drivers/riders aged 16 to 24 (24%)
crashes involving senior drivers/riders aged 60 and over (22%).
More than half of the motorcyclist fatalities in 2020 occurred in rural areas, while a third occurred within the Brisbane urban area. Just under half of all motorcyclist fatalities occurred on weekends, 65% occurred in daylight and 59% occurred on straight roads.

Motorcyclist fatalities occurred mostly as a result of single vehicle type crashes 61%, with fall from vehicle and hit object crashes accounting for 57% of motorcyclist fatalities.

There were ten motorcyclist fatalities not wearing a helmet during 2020, which represents 19% of all motorcyclist fatalities for this period.

Thank you the Department of Transport and Main Roads for the data.

STATE-WIDE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY BLITZ THIS WEEKEND

Police are embarking on a three day motorcycle safety blitz, aiming to reduce fatalities. Queensland Police say that motorcyclist fatalities are on track to reach a 5 year high, and they must intervene to protect the most vulnerable road users.

The police describe that the road accidents mostly happen on weekends, and are middle-aged or older motorcyclists recreationally riding.

“So far this year 41 motorcyclists including a pillion passenger have died on our roads with lives lost being almost 40 per cent higher than the previous five years average of the same period,” Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus said.

Another incentive to ensure you manage the way you use your phone.
Plan your drive, put your phone in "drive mode" or switch to silent to avoid being distracted and maybe avoid copping a hefty fine. Is the risk worth the reward?
