Plate thickness alone doesn’t determine how a boat performs.

The construction process behind the hull is just as important.

Two boats can use the same thickness plate and come in at a similar weight, but the final result comes down to how the hull is designed, assembled, and welded.

In many ways it’s like comparing apples and oranges — similar specifications on paper, but completely different boats once you’re out on the water.

Plate boats are sometimes described as a “flat pack,” but that can be misleading. Many flat-pack systems are designed to be easy to assemble, not necessarily to achieve the tightest possible hull structure.

At Hewats Plate Boats, a lot of attention goes into the way the hull is put together — making sure the plates are pulled together properly and the structure is tight before final welding.

Attention to detail during construction is something that can’t be added later — it has to be built into the hull from the very beginning.

That extra care in the build process can make a big difference on the water — softer landings, less hull noise, and a more solid feel in rough conditions.

650 Hard Top – Layout Breakdown

Designed with real offshore use in mind.

The transom layout is set up to suit spearfishing and diving, with a double step-through transom that makes getting in and out of the water simple while still keeping the cockpit open and usable.

There’s plenty of room to move around whether you’re gearing up, diving, or fishing.

A 700mm internal deck height combined with 260mm wide gunwales gives the cockpit a comfortable and secure feel when working around the boat.

Everything about the layout is designed for practicality offshore.

As most of you already know or have seen we have now officially moved out of our workshop in Johnsonville. After 10 years of Marine services I have decided to step away from the spanners. The plate boats are my passion and I will be putting all my focus into them going forward.
Thank you to all our amazing customers for your support over the last 10 years, it means so much to me.
