Since itโ€™s Route du Rhum season...
this monthโ€™s destination is in the North Atlantic.

Letโ€™s set sail for Madeira, a usual stopover on a transatlantic crossing. Unless youโ€™re racing, of course!

Welcome to Funchal, the islandโ€™s capital and main port. Located on the southern coast, it is somewhat sheltered from the prevailing winds. But not always from the swell...

A land of tourism, traditions, history, cuisine, and hiking, donโ€™t underestimate its botanical treasures either, as the island is always in bloom! In short, itโ€™s a wonderfully exotic stopover.

The luckiest of the 118 sailors setting sail from Saint-Malo on Sunday might just catch a glimpse of it...

Have a safe trip!

Off-season is when the work begins.
And thereโ€™s plenty of it on a wooden boat!โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Restoring or touching up the varnish is a must.
But which product should you choose? How should you apply it?
And ultimately, how can you make it last?

We cover all these topics in our guide (in the comments).
Everything you need to give your wooden boat and spars a fresh new look โœจ

Close the hatches!

Rainy season being upon us, this means itโ€™s time to batten down your boat.

Whether stored for the winter or just closed up for a few days or weeks, this is when nasty smells start to develop on board.

The solution?
๐Ÿ”น Find the source of the unpleasant odours
๐Ÿ”น Neutralise the immediate cause
๐Ÿ”น Prevent it from returning in the long term

To put this into practice, head over to our blog (link in the comments).

It feels like it would never happen.
Until the day it does.

And when it does, it rages so very quickly. The aftermath, more often than not, is a total loss.

So to minimize the risk of fire on board, here are three key steps:
โš ๏ธ Avoid dangerous situations.
๐Ÿงฏ Carry the appropriate equipment.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’ Know how to use it.

Itโ€™s as simple as that.

It's the off-season ๐Ÿ‚ While you're putting your boat away for winter, someone else is eager to set sail.

You may be new to peer-to-peer rentals. Or just looking to optimize your existing setup. Either way, there are critical steps to ensure a successful season. Even when you're not on board.

We've compiled a practical guide covering insurance, safety checks, and trust-building to help you rent out your asset with confidence.

Destination this month: Vanua Lava

Today, we're taking you to the Banks Islands archipelago. We're anchored in Waterfall Bay, in far northern Vanuatu ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡บ

Just like its neighbours, its an island of volcanic origin. Its mountainous interior is covered in dense jungle that even engulfs the rugged coastline. Cliffs plunge down into magnificent, refreshing waterfalls (the name might have tipped you off). Check out the comments for a picture of the twin waterfalls ๐Ÿ’ฆ

The anchor rests on 15 metres of sand. Ideal, but you can tell the coral isnโ€™t far away. Weโ€™re on the leeward side of the island, fairly sheltered from the trade winds. Yet itโ€™s still an open roadsted and the wind comes down from the hills in gusts. In short, itโ€™s a challenging place to stay and it pays to stay alert. Fortunately, weโ€™re rewarded with magnificent water, perfect for a snorkeling exploration ๐Ÿคฟ (see comments).

Three red lights at the harbour exit.

What do they mean?

๐Ÿ”ด
๐Ÿ”ด
๐Ÿ”ด

They may be fixed or occulting slowly. And they quite logically signal that passage in the relevant direction is prohibited (in this case, the exit). Most often, because a large vessel is entering via a narrow channel.

Conversely, when a vessel is departing, the lights on the opposite side indicate that entry is prohibited. Once the channel is clear again, the three red lights are replaced by green lights, also either fixed or occulting slowly.

Note that if all three red lights flash, the meaning changes: the port is locked down. Entry and exit are completely prohibited: you must not approach the port due to a serious hazard, such as pollution, an explosion, an accident, etc. In this case, the red lights do not simply mean you should wait. You must divert.

One final point: unlike the lights and shapes on ships, these rules are not covered by the internationally recognised ColRegs. They are national and local regulations. These are usually very similar and are based on internationally recognised best practice. However, there may be local variations. Please check and, if in doubt, contact the port authority.

If you're packing your bags soon,

Now is the time to show some love.

Your life jacket needs just a bit of end of summer care.
It won't take long, but it will go a long way to making sure it lasts and it remains reliable.

Your sails have likely taken a beating.

After a full season of hard sailing, salt, wind and sun each take their toll on your canvas. Flogging, chafe, UV exposure, stretch can sharply reduce the lifespan of your sails.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Now is the time for owners to inspect their sails for shape loss, stitching failure and UV damage before problems compound during winter storage. Start organising cleaning, maintenance and repairs, so they get taken care of as soon as you haul out or tie down for the off season.

Our comprehensive guide will provide you with the full advice to ensure you don't have to buy sails as often : https://ready4sea.com/en/sail-care-make-sails-last-longer/

And if you've still got many days of sailing planned this year, this checklist also deals with caring for your sails on the water and after your trips.
