This one came with a bit of a story 🔧
A young rider had just picked up a second hand Norco Ryde Dirt Jumper and did exactly what you’d expect… straight out to practice jumps, wheelies ect.
First ride, back tyre rubbing on the frame.
A loose spoke was tightened at home and it improved.
Next ride… the rear wheel completely jammed.
That’s when I got the message.
After checking it over, it all made sense the spokes were loose right around the wheel, and with the kind of load a dirt jumper takes, especially learning jumps and wheelies & the lateral load, the rear wheel didn’t stand a chance. It ended up badly buckled.
On further inspection of the wheel, I found the hub and bearings were defective and required replacement.
Honestly, this is pretty common with second hand bikes, previous owner not keeping up the maintenance required. These bikes take an absolute beating, so it’s imperative to keep up the maintenance required.
A proper check over before that first ride, particularly spoke tension, can make a big difference and usually prevents this sort of thing happening.
Be it a second hand bike or a new bike, I will always completely strip it down, inspect and repair as needed, for safety and peace of mind’s sake.
We got it sorted properly
✔️ New rear wheel and tyre
✔️ Full clean and re grease
✔️ Pedal shafts, front wheel bearings and headset bearings serviced
✔️ Brakes adjusted and cable lubed
✔️ Brake cable re routed for smoother operation
Now it’s riding how it should, strong, smooth, and ready to handle what it’s built for.
The Norco Ryde Dirt Jumper is ready to rock - Back out there sending it! 🤙
At Peninsula Marine and Auto I spend most of my time on boats and cars, but bikes have always been a passion, especially riding MTB- I enjoy getting bikes running safely and performing exactly as they should.
