I have Two race yachts heading into survey this week! Two buyers and two very different plans for what comes next. One in particular is "out-there-exciting"! I actually can't wait to tell you all about it!

These two buyers want to take their yachts down very different paths, and so we've got the best of surveyors to be every bit as thorough with one as they will be with the other.

We're talking detailed structural inspection, FLIR thermal imaging, capacitance moisture testing and traditional percussion sounding of the deck and hull, along with the riggers coming in to inspect the rig, and possible pull the rig out for a re-rig while we're there, machinery, systems, safety cat stuff, and all the other areas that form part of a comprehensive pre-purchase survey.

I'm not the surveyor — and importantly, the surveyor works independently for the buyer. I just drive the boats in and out of slings and co-ordinate people with schedules and lifts.

I understand racing yachts. I understand what happens when boats are pushed hard offshore. So I understand enough of the technical and safety side to bring the right people together, ask the right questions and help buyers and sellers navigate what can become a very technical part of the purchase.

Ultimately, the survey gives each buyer the information they need to decide whether the yacht in front of them is the right platform for what they want to do next. Its very exciting! I mean serious, right, but wow 🤯 people amaze me!

Comanche, Sydney to Hobart, Australian sailing…. 🙌⛵️👌

It follows Herman Winning and brothers Nathan and Peter Dean racing Andoo Comanche to Hobart, 25 years after Nathan and Peter lost their father, John Dean, in the tragic 1998 Sydney to Hobart.

It’s the history, the families, the friendships and generations of people brought together through sailing!

And ….. this is the Winning family now backing Australia’s return to the America’s Cup in 2027!

Herman Winning, who skippered Comanche to Hobart line honours, is part of the family backing Team Australia, alongside a pretty extraordinary line-up including Tom Slingsby, Glenn Ashby and Grant Simmer.

There’s a lot of Australian sailing history tied up in this story: the Sydney to Hobart and the legacy of 1998, to Comanche and now Australia having another crack at the America’s Cup…

Anyway, I’ve only just started watching it-, but I’m so excited to see sailing on Netflix and such a great story!! 😍

I’ve got one. Southport Yacht Club’s Sail Past & Blessing of the Fleet is on Saturday 5 September. Which means, if you’ve been thinking about buying a boat for summer… you’d better get moving! 😂

There’s still time to find the boat, make an offer, leave yourself a little negotiating wiggle room, organise the survey and sea trial, settle — and get your new pride and joy ready for her first proper outing.

Because your new boat needs to be shown off to your fellow yachties; introduced to the competition; welcomed into the club and boating community; and, most importantly, properly BLESSED for the season ahead!

I’m already working on getting some newly purchased boats and their new owners into the Sail Past this year — and I’d love to add a few more.

WHAT DOES A BOAT BROKER ACTUALLY DO? 😂⛵

This week, my job description includes…

🏗️ Boatyard logistics — tides, lifts, surveyors, riggers, engineers, owners… getting the boat AND everyone else to the right place at the right time.

🛂 Visa support department — helping explain why someone's flying halfway around the world to buy a yacht.

📋 Boat broker — two boats under contract, juggling surveys, sea trials, negotiations, deposits, paperwork and settlements.

📸 Photographer & listing machine — travelling to boats, taking photos, gathering specs and inventories, then furiously typing for hours to get them online ASAP!

🛠️ Pre-listing project manager — boats you haven't seen yet are being prepared behind the scenes. Detailing, repairs, servicing, rigging, antifouling… coordinating trades and timing so they're ready to hit the market.

🏨 Accommodation coordinator — helping buyers work out where to stay while inspecting their potential new boat.

🧠 Racing Rules interpreter — currently deep in ███████ requirements involving watertight bulkheads, compartmentalisation, water ballast, stability, righting moments and enough technical terminology to make my brain hurt. Totally stoked to be back into this realm though! 🥷🤫🙈🙉🙊

Very proud to be back with the Boating Industry Association — this time representing Oceania Marine, both as a BIA member and an Accredited Marine Broker.

There’s a bit of a full-circle feeling to this for me.

The BIA was a big part of my introduction to the wider marine industry in my 20s, when I was working with Ronstan, who were heavily involved with the Association. It was then that I first saw how much work these industry bodies do behind the scenes — advocating for and supporting our marine industry while the rest of us are usually head down, bum up, busy running our own businesses.

Mark and I also had a brief stint involved at board/committee level with the Australian superyacht industry around 20 years ago, during the early days of our Oceania Marine marine engineering business. Our involvement was to help entice more superyachts to Australia, as Mark had a lifetime experience as superyacht captain internationally, and brought a wealth of knowledge to the table. We ended up heading back overseas to work on superyachts again, which ended our term on the committee.

But it gave us another appreciation for the importance of industry associations and the people who volunteer their time and knowledge to them.

I’ve always loved the networking side too. When you’re busy inside your own business, you need an excuse to step outside it — meet others in the industry, swap knowledge and ideas, and learn from people doing completely different things in the same marine world.

So it feels pretty special, 30-odd years later, to bring Oceania Marine back into that industry network — now as Oceania Marine Brokerage & Yacht Services.

I’m looking forward to reconnecting with some familiar faces, meeting a new generation of members and getting involved again.

Thanks BIA for the lovely welcome and all the help you’ve offered me these past few months. ⚓️🥰
