Why do my Tyres keep going down if thereβs is no Puncture or Damage.
All Tyres lose air over time as air molecules permeate through the rubbers compound; itβs called Permeation.
In short term the molecular structure of a tyre has small gaps that the air inside of a tyre can pass through the rubber compound. Depending on the driving pressure behind this process determines how fast it happens.
Itβs nothing significant but over time it can be significant.
Tyres Typically lose 1-3 psi every month, even with no damage or leak at all. Heat, ages and everyday driving conditions can speed this process up. When there is higher pressure there is more force pushing the air though the tyre. This is a natural process so donβt be alarmed.
Can you stop permeation. Short answer is no you can only stay on top of it for the best results out of your Tyres.
We recommend checking tyre pressures every 2-3 months as staying on top of tyre pressures can potentially extend its life and make it wear better across the tyres tread.
Driving while underinflated is very unsafe as the sidewall canβt sustain its shape underload therefore causing internal damage.
Over inflation can be just as bad. Too much air can cause the middle to budge and therefore only using the middle of a tyre and wearing out extremely quick.
So next time at the service station have a think about when the last time you checked your Tyre Pressures If your ever unsure pop down to Autosport tyre world Clarence gardens and we can help you have a better understanding and make sure your tyres are safe.
