The customer was told the evaporator was leaking and that the dashboard had already been removed to inspect it. They were even told they found metal coming from the evaporator.

Something didn’t add up.

After carrying out my own diagnosis, I pressure-tested the system with 270 PSI of nitrogen, and it held pressure perfectly.

In my experience, removing an evaporator requires removing the entire dashboard a job that typically takes far longer than the time the vehicle had reportedly been at the workshop.

The result? The evaporator didn’t need replacing, and the customer saved $6,000. 💰

This is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters. Don’t replace expensive parts based on assumptions get a second opinion first.

Got called out by a 70-year-old pensioner lady who showed me a quote from Westco Motor Cairns Mazda.
$2,900 for a condenser part and $600 for labour.

I was shocked. The real cost of the part is around $300. Almost 10x cheaper.

I checked everything myself.
Pressure tested with nitrogen at 280 psi for 10 minutes, no pressure drop.
Vacuum test held at -14 psi for another 10 minutes.
No leaks at all.
Added dye just in case for the future and did a full regas.

Aircon is now working perfectly, blowing 3 degrees from the vents.

Total cost for her: $150 and peace of mind.
She can now drive around for Christmas with aircon in this FNQ heat.

Shame on Mazda for ripping people off, especially elderly ladies.
That could be anyone’s grandma. We have to look after them.
