ATT QLD Electricians working on smoke alarms:
We have noticed there seems some uncertainty regarding interpretation of requirements of the new QLD domestic smoke alarm legislation, which may be resulting in undue pressure to complete all smoke alarm upgrade projects. It has also resulted in some electricians possibly declining some of their regular electrical work to meet the deadline.
We thought it would be good to point out the actual wording in the QLD legislation:
“From 1 January 2022, at the commencement of a new lease or lease renewal, you must ensure your dwelling / unit meets the requirements of the domestic smoke alarm legislation. This may involve installing interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms into the bedrooms in addition to the currently required smoke alarms.”

For existing domestic leases signed before 31/12/2021 you therefore have until the lease is either renewed after 31/12/2021, or a new lease is signed after 31/12/2021, to meet the requirements of the domestic smoke alarm legislation.
