“Pad Slapping” - Not an official mechanical term… but we all know it when we see it 👀

This vehicle came in showing a pretty clear example of what can happen when new brake pads are fitted onto worn rotors.

While it might seem like a cheaper option at the time, reusing worn rotors can lead to uneven contact between the pad and rotor surface. This results in uneven wear patterns like this and often reducing braking performance overall ‍❌

That’s why when we carry out brake repairs, we replace both pads and rotors together rather than just “slapping a set of pads in”.

✅ Better braking performance
✅ More even wear
✅ Less chance of noise/vibration
✅ Better long-term reliability

Checking for front end play …

…and discovering the wheel has the structural integrity of custard 😂

This amount of movement is a clear sign that suspension or steering components have excessive wear and need attention ⚠️

In this instance, the ol' GQ had excessive wheel bearing play - which in any other car would have certainly been collapsed by this point.

If your 4x4 feels loose, wanders on the road or starts making clunks and knocks over bumps - please don’t ignore it.

Your vehicle will always tell you when something isn’t happy 👌

On this week's episode of "it was driving fine until…" 🫣

These photos show the before & after of an automatic transmission service and this tiny magnet can tell a very expensive story if ignored.

🧲That fuzzy-looking build-up on the magnet is actually metal particles from inside the automatic transmission. A certain amount is normal over time but when it starts building up heavily like this, it can be an early sign that things inside are wearing out faster than they should.

This vehicle was getting dangerously close to transmission failure, but catching it when we did saved the owner from a massive repair bill 💸

Transmission servicing is one of the most overlooked maintenance items we see, especially in vehicles used for towing, heavy loads or lots of stop-start driving.

“Yeah mate, it’s got a little bit of an oil leak.” 👀

This was certainly one of those "Expectation VS Reality" moments when we came face to face with said oil leak📹😂

While this one is definitely on the extreme side, oil leaks are something we recommend getting checked early before they turn into major repairs.

A relatively small leak today can become:
❌ Low oil levels
❌ Damaged seals/components
❌ Smoke & burning smells
❌ Major engine damage

This one made for a good video though!

Moral of the story: if your vehicle starts marking its territory more than usual, probably don’t ignore it 😅

A little something different from the usual workshop content 👌

Behind every mechanic is usually:
✔ Too many tools
✔ Too many unfinished jobs

For Dylan, it’s this 1981 Holden WB One Tonner.

Definitely not a quick build, but seeing it slowly come together over the years makes it worth it 🙌

Getting set up for the big lap 👌

This LandCruiser was in the workshop recently getting prepped for life on the road - and as you can see, there’s a fair bit more involved than just a standard service 🔧

We stripped it down and worked through a full range of upgrades and repairs to make sure it’s ready for whatever comes its way, including brake upgrades, suspension repairs, driveline replacements and a cooling system overhaul ❄

🔧 Another one that’s given it everything it had… and then some

What started as a drivability concern turned into this 😬 The clutch was completely broken apart - the friction material has failed, sections have separated, and there’s debris spread throughout the bell housing.

At this stage, the vehicle was no longer driveable and required a full clutch replacement to get it back on the road 🚗

It’s a good reminder that when a car starts feeling “a bit off”, there’s usually something going on behind the scenes ⚠️

If your clutch is slipping, struggling to engage gears, or just not feeling right, it’s always best to have it looked at sooner rather than later.
