100% correct, as Mitch states Maxi fuses are inadequate for high current applications. Throw them away and replace with a bolt down midi style holder to prevent unwanted melting and issues later down the track.

Caravan Power Upgrade Complete 🔋🚐⚡
We recently had Peter’s caravan in for a full Victron suite and lithium battery upgrade, including:
• Victron BMV-712 Battery Monitor
• Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30
• Victron Battery Protect 65A
• Victron Orion 50A (throttled to 25A)
• Victron 12/30 AC Charger
• PowerPaul Australia Pty Ltd Cub 182Ah Lithium Battery

As part of this upgrade, we removed 52kg from the drawbar, helping balance a recently added bike carrier. At the same time, we gained an additional 62Ah of usable power and freed up valuable boot space ⚡🔋
The result is a lighter setup, improved weight distribution, more usable power, and better storage.
Peter is now set up for comfortable overnight off-grid free camping 🏕️🔆

What a busy week⚡️
A tidy little Sirocco fan install on a Jayco Starcraft.

Jaycos don’t make it easy — there’s minimal 12V power in the walls due to their wireless switch panels communicating back to a central control box. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fans exactly where you want them.

We take the extra time to carefully route cabling through cupboards, measuring and spacing P-clips evenly for a secure, professional finish. Every install is done with the same care and pride as if it were our own van.

Each Sirocco fan is individually protected with a 3-amp blade fuse wherever power is sourced — protecting both the circuit and the fan itself.

🔥 This week on “Wow… that got HOT”🔥
It wasn’t a cheap install.
It had all quality Redarc gear.
It wasn’t DIY.
It came from a reputable shop.
And yet… one tiny 1% detail nearly undid the whole system.
A small surface-area lug paired with a high-current connection made for poor surface area connection which created resistance!
Another issue seen was an underated cable and blade fuse powering a contant load above its reccomended current carrying capacity.

Resistance = heat.
A lot of heat.
Hot enough to soften and melt hardware.
No fires this time — thankfully.
But it’s a sharp reminder that in 12V systems, the smallest details carry the biggest consequences.
Good components don’t save a poor connection.
Attention to detail does.
✔️ Correct lug size
✔️ Correct cable size
✔️ No heatshrink between lugs
✔️ Full contact surface for high current lugs (largest on bottom, and work your way up)
✔️ Proper torque
✔️ Real-world load awareness

🚗 Long days, but worth it every time.
This week started off with some big hours when a customer’s 2013 Hilux threw up fuel pressure fault codes — right before a planned holiday 😬
The issue started after some cable was run through the firewall to power a fridge in the back seat. Once we’d wrapped up our scheduled jobs for the day, we headed out late in the arvo to take a look.
After getting the full story, our gut feeling was the firewall grommet… and sure enough, a knife had been used to pierce the rubber. A quick end-to-end pin-out check between the ECU and fuel pressure sensor confirmed a break in the circuit.
Once the loom was removed for inspection, the damage was worse than expected — five wires and a shielded wire cut clean through 😳
We carried out repairs using solder and dual-wall heat shrink due to the limited room and timeframes. The result? The Hilux was back on the road and ready for holidays just two days later 🙌
Some days are long, but helping someone get away on their hard-earned holiday makes it all worthwhile.

🔋 Big Power, Done Right

From Darren’s Leader Caravan, which saw a serious jump from 200Ah to an impressive 690Ah of PowerPaul Australia Pty Ltd Lithium Scouts, We reworked inverter cabling from 70mm2 to 120mm2, upgraded solar, added 280w of panels and delivered a clean, well-thought-out power distribution — this build was all about maximising capacity without wasting space.

Paired with upgrades to his 300 Series to keep essentials like Starlink and the fridge running effortlessly, now more than ready for long stays off-grid these holidays.

🚐 Reliable Touring Upgrades

Peter’s van received a solid refresh with proven Victron gear, ensuring smarter power management and improved charging efficiency. The addition of colour-coded Anderson plugs on the tow vehicle makes setup simple, safe, and stress-free — exactly how touring should be.

⚡ Fixing the Weak Links

For Roy’s van, reliability was the priority. We replaced failing components with trusted Victron and Redarc hardware and added a chassis-mounted Anderson plug for portable solar, giving him flexible charging options wherever he pulls up.

Every build this year has had the same goal:

This week on “Factory-Delivered Faulty Workmanship”…
We’ve got a late-model hybrid caravan in the workshop for charging issues and a solar upgrade, and what we found underneath the fit-out was wild.

During the inspection we uncovered multiple serious wiring issues:

🔌 The inverter’s 2 B&S cable was run to one joining bar, while
🔌 The 2 B&S cable from the shunt was run to another.

The two bars were linked with a tiny 6mm cable rated to only 40A, yet it was carrying the inverter load. This setup was one use away from a “what’s that burning plastic smell?” moment.

We also found:

🔥 Multiple lugs stacked on the same joining bars without proper spacing or attachment—guaranteed to cause resistance and heat under high loads.
🔥 The battery monitoring shunt’s positive cable was squeezed under the main battery lug, drastically reducing contact area. Under heavy load this can create heat, melt terminals, and even damage cables.

Luckily, we caught all of this before it turned into a real failure… but it makes you wonder—how many more caravans are wired like this from the factory?

🔥 This week in the workshop: Jay’s N70 Hilux got a full electrical overhaul!

This Hilux rolled in with a mix of old-school wiring, rocker switches, relays and auto-reset breakers — so we stripped it back and brought everything up to modern standards.

✅ What we upgraded:

• Installed a Roadpower 8-way power distribution switch panel, removing all the old rocker switches, installed some temp blanks in their place. (factory trims to come).
• Upgraded the winch setup with a Scrub King push-twist isolator on a stainless bracket.
• Swapped the AGM for an iTechworld 120Ah lithium battery box in the canopy.
• Added a Kaon over-battery fuse holder and Modular fuse system.

⚡ Fixes & clean-ups:

• Traced and fixed an issue with the LED tail lights flashing with the indicators.
• Fitted a new trailer plug.
• Cleaned up existing wiring and corrected incorrectly fused or unfused circuits.
•Reconfigured the supply circuit for the thermo fans, incorrectly sized cable replaced as well as correcting its fuse rating.

Always satisfying turning messy wiring into something reliable, safe and serviceable. 👌

🏆 EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH 🏍️

Meet Jayden – head technician, customer service rep, accounts department, cleaner, and CEO of Autotech Leisure.
Basically… the whole staff.

To reward his tireless efforts (and because he approved his own leave), Jayden has granted himself an all-expenses-paid trip to ride motorbikes across Vietnam for 3 weeks. 🇻🇳✌️

He’ll be soaking up the scenery, dodging traffic, and eating his body weight in street food — all in the name of research (or so he says).

💬 While he’s away:
The office will be closed, but feel free to message through any enquiries and he’ll get back to you as soon as he returns — or whenever the WiFi allows.
