Oldfield Chasing Milestone as Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series Continues
The Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series heads into its third round of the season this Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex, with another stacked field ready to continue what has already been an incredibly competitive championship.
The nomination list is almost identical to last weekend's field, with Greg Horan, Nic Marshall and Jay Cardy joining the lineup, while Darren Ahearn and Victorian visitor Dylan Barrow are the only absentees from the previous round.
Fresh off his victory at Powerpalooza, Warren Oldfield carries the championship lead into the weekend and will be determined to build on his early momentum. The veteran enters the night on the verge of two remarkable milestones, with another feature race victory set to become his 40th career Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series feature win, while a podium finish would mark his 120th series podium.
Standing closest to him in the standings is nephew Beau Oldfield, who has quietly put together an outstanding start to the season. Beau is the only driver to have finished on the podium in both feature races so far and sits just eight points behind Warren, ensuring the family rivalry could become one of the stories of the night.
Joe Chalmers bounced back strongly last weekend with a podium finish of his own and has climbed to third in the standings, just 16 points behind the leader. Sitting only a single point behind Chalmers is the ever-consistent Michael Holmes, whose steady performances continue to keep him firmly in championship contention.
Rounding out the current top five is Mat Robbins, who impressed with another strong performance last weekend to record a top-five finish and continue his promising start to the campaign.
One driver who made an immediate impact upon returning was Brent Vosbergen. After sitting out the opening round, Vosbergen fought his way to an impressive fourth-place finish last weekend and will undoubtedly be aiming to return to Victory Lane this Saturday.
Perhaps the biggest indication of just how evenly matched the field is came during the opening two rounds. Across the eight heat races contested so far this season, there have been eight different winners, highlighting the incredible depth of talent throughout the field and suggesting every race remains anyone's to win.
Jay Cardy is expected to return after engine issues sidelined him last weekend, a rare occurrence for one of the category's most reliable competitors over the past decade. With the mechanical gremlins hopefully behind him, Cardy will be eager to make up for lost ground.
Veteran Brad Blake can also never be discounted. A 40-time Perth Motorplex feature winner, Blake has repeatedly shown he knows how to get the job done when it matters most.
Rookie Nathan Chalmers has continued to impress through his opening two meetings in Late Models and looks increasingly comfortable with every lap, while fellow rookie Ian Wright will be keen to bounce back after a difficult debut that didn't produce the results he was hoping for.
Luke Halliday also has unfinished business. Starting from the front row last weekend, Halliday looked well placed before his night ended prematurely on the infield. He'll be looking to convert his pace into a strong finish this Saturday.
With milestone victories on the line, a tight championship battle developing and virtually every driver in the field proving capable of winning races, all the ingredients are there for another thrilling chapter in what is already shaping as one of the most competitive Canning Vale Toyota Late Model Series seasons in recent memory.
Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex promises another spectacular night of Late Model racing.
