What started life as a 991.1 Carrera S now stands out more than a high carat diamond.

The clue is in the details, all you’ll note is a ducktail spoiler, but what about the rear arches which have been raised 20mm to better accommodate the custome wheels, being pushed into those arches courtesy of air ride performance kit.

And the sound from the 3.8 litre flat six resonating across the streets, funnelled out by a custom set up.

Porsches do so well out the box that they don’t need much to elevate past something run of the mill. And this adds further proof that Japan knows how to improve a Porsche no end.

Even the preparation looks like an event in itself.

The latest edition of as you no doubt had gathered was held at a closed part of the famous KK Line in Ginza, Tokyo.

Bringing together the finest air cooled machines in Japan, and placing them in a location befitting from Scapes in , and have raised the bar (and level, literally) for what could be achieved at a pop up automotive event.

If the set up looks like crazy, imagine what the event was like?

“We owned a 997 C4S when they first came out. Sold it a long time ago, went on to other cars, even a 992, but nothing ever did what the 997 felt like.”

That feeling stuck. “During that time I kept looking at Cup cars, then street converted Cup style 991s and 997s. That’s when I decided to start with a mint car and do a Street Cup style build.”

The draw was simple. “It’s the racing aesthetics; the aero, the wheels, how it sits. I believe the 997 is the best looking Cup car. I just wanted something that’s the best of both worlds. Cup car looks on the street, without the wing.”

Where the build really changed direction was inside. “It’s mad how Porsche used a crazy amount of cheap plastics everywhere. The interior was the biggest part of the car when we decided to change everything into leather and high quality materials.”

Nothing was left untouched. “Basically each and everything. Picking materials from different parts of the world and putting it all together.”

The result feels less like a modification and more like a second life. “It’s like if the 997 was recommissioned by Porsche and someone tells you that you can spec it to whatever level you want. This would be the experience.”

A year and a half in, worth the wait?

The 9X9 by KALMAR is getting the winter test treatment.

A 993 chassis combined with 992 engine and gearboxes means lightweight classic lines with a power and ability to surpass today’s performance icons. It sounds and looks like a hoot to drive.

The 9X9 has 930hp, capable of hitting 60 in 2 seconds. Yikes.

A car famous for its unpredictable nature when not treated with care being slid around is a sight to behold.

It’s great to see that Porsche, Michelin and other tuning firms are able to help tame the Carrera GT with improved technology and testing. It does pose the question; is that fearful aura still around the car?
